Why We Chose South Italy (Puglia) for Our Daughter’s First Birthday Trip

There is something profoundly different about your first trip after becoming parents.

For us, travel had always meant chasing sunrises, squeezing in one more viewpoint before sunset, taking detours for hidden beaches, and saying yes to every adventure. Then our daughter arrived, and beautifully, everything changed.

For almost a year, our passports remained tucked away as we settled into a new rhythm of midnight feeds, first smiles, tiny milestones, and the wonderfully chaotic world of parenthood. We never stopped dreaming of travel, but we knew our first journey as a family of three had to be different.

It wasn’t about ticking destinations off a bucket list anymore.

It was about finding a place where we could slow down.

Even more special, our little girl would celebrate her first birthday during the trip. We wanted this milestone to be more than a birthday—it was a celebration of our first year as parents and a reminder that life doesn’t end after children; it simply takes on a new pace.

So the search began.

Not for the most famous destination.

Not for the most luxurious resort.

But for somewhere that balanced beauty with simplicity.

We wanted turquoise waters without exhausting transfers, charming towns where we could wander with a stroller, beautiful cafés to linger over long lunches, historic streets to get wonderfully lost in, and sunsets that reminded us why we fell in love with travelling in the first place.

That is how we found South Italy.

More specifically, Puglia.

Unlike the busier stretches of the Amalfi Coast, Puglia felt wonderfully relaxed. The coastline was spectacular, yet the towns still felt authentic. Distances between destinations were manageable, making it perfect for travelling with an infant without spending hours in the car every day.

After weeks of planning, we chose two bases—Monopoli and Otranto.

Monopoli immediately stole our hearts with its whitewashed old town, picturesque fishing harbour, leisurely seaside promenades and easy access to some of Puglia’s most beautiful beaches. It offered exactly the kind of slow mornings and golden evenings we had been craving. We stayed right at the heart of the Historic Town (Centro Storico) and also right by the seaside. The bustling Town Centre with its lively vibes and the promenade with its stoic calmness made our stay ‘un 10 perfetto’

Otranto, on the other hand, introduced us to a different side of the region. Medieval walls, crystal-clear Adriatic waters, dramatic limestone cliffs and hidden coves created the perfect blend of history and coastal beauty. It also placed us within easy reach of some of the most breathtaking beaches in Salento.

Together, the two towns became the ideal combination.

One offered postcard-perfect coastal charm.

The other delivered rugged natural beauty.

Both were wonderfully walkable, refreshingly unhurried, and surprisingly family-friendly.

We deliberately resisted the temptation to pack our itinerary with too many destinations. Instead of constantly changing hotels, we embraced slow travel—taking day trips, returning to familiar cafés, strolling the same streets in the evenings, and leaving enough room for naps, gelato breaks and unexpected discoveries.

As travel bloggers, we’re often drawn towards ambitious itineraries. This time, we wanted something else.

We wanted memories rather than miles.

We wanted leisurely breakfasts overlooking the sea instead of rushing to the next attraction.

We wanted our daughter to dip her tiny feet into the Mediterranean, chase pigeons through old piazzas, celebrate her very first birthday beside impossibly blue water, and perhaps—though she won’t remember it herself—begin a lifelong love affair with travel.

Looking back, choosing South Italy wasn’t simply choosing a destination.

It was choosing a different way to travel.

A slower way.

A gentler way.

A way that reminded us that the most meaningful journeys aren’t always the ones where you see the most—they’re the ones where you truly experience the places, together. And Puglia turned out to be the perfect place to begin this new chapter of our travels as a family.
